Towards Spiritual Mastery – Destinations I
1 I waited patiently for the Lord;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
The beginning of Psalm 40 talks about 2 destinations – a slimy pit and a stable rock.
Today – Slimy Pits
Our minds visit here – rare for the victorious and chronic for those in bondage.
Slimy pits create distraction. They overwhelm our senses and rob our moments. Slimy pits neutralize any spiritual mastery, openly mocking any progress. The world systems navigate us toward slimy pits as if these places are sustainable. Lies. They are not.
Yelling at slimy pits, helps not. They still follow us. In fact, we bring them in. Giving them a certain access – to our minds, our lives, our reasonings, our history.
A battle ensues to define our normal. How will our everyday minds function?
Every now and again, questions emerge, fleeting bursts of hope.
What does life look like – out of a pit?
Is this a place I can go?
Is it real?
I waited patiently for the Lord;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
We know we’re headed in the right direction, when the pit starts becoming uncomfortable – again. And in our desperation, we begin to embrace an alternate narrative – the truth of the Lord.
